When making that majorly important decision to replace your old inefficient boiler for a new combi boiler its more than important to know you are replacing it with the correct type of boiler to suite your home !!
I have seen more times than I would like !! boilers massively undersized and the wrong type installed in my customers properties and do you think the customers knew this 🤔 no!!
The problem is the boiler could be overworked and inefficient, it’s like riding up a hill on a small bike ,fighting a losing battle don’t you think??
This makes a great efficient a rated appliance well not so efficient
I’m steve at The Boiler Doctor yorks boiler specialist ,and I’m willing to tell you the facts the good the bad and the ugly !!!
The good
- Efficiency
Combi boilers are much more efficient than regular boilers one of the reasons is there’s no stored water meaning it heats the water as you use it , 😀 no more heating full tanks of water for it not to be used .
- Space
Combi boilers are very compact housing every component needed without external pumps and tanks ect you can fit some within a standard kitchen wall unit , if your Swapping from a conventional boiler and tanks you gain so much valuable space in your home.
- Cost
The cost of installing a combi boiler can be a cheaper option than replacing your existing boiler tanks and cylinder, not only saving on the installation but if a problem occurs parts for a combi boiler are readily available from local merchants
- Supply of hot water
Because combi boilers heat the water as it passes through the boiler you have an unlimited supply of hot water so for the busy household it’s great no more waiting for the hot water to heat up
- Works under pressure
Combination boilers heat up your home much quicker as the system is under pressure , imagine a pressure cooker the water heats up so much quicker because its not open to the atmosphere
- Water pressure
Because water is heated directly from the mains the pressure on the hot should increase and be balanced , you can install thermostatic showers on a Pressurised system without the need of a pump
- Cleaner
Combi boilers tent to have less sludge within them and are much cleaner than older gravity fed systems again this is because its under pressure and oxidisation takes much longer to occur meaning the boiler remains so much more efficient
- Safety
Combi boiler are designed to be room sealed and fan flued with various safety features built into the boiler keeping you and your family safe
- Cleaner water
Conventional boilers have a tank of stored water (usually in the loft) which is not potable (it’s not safe to consume)
Combination boilers are fed directly from the mains supply meaning there is no stored water keeping it much Cleaner and safe
- Servicing
Most heating engineers are trained on Combination boilers and regularly work and service them ,finding a local engineer in your area to solve any issues will be much easier
- Selling your home ??
It’s a great investment having an a rated combi boiler installed and makes selling / renting out your property so much easier with higher ratings on your epc certificate
The bad and the ugly
- Water pressure
Although your pressure usually increases on your hot water you can only get out of a combi boiler what you put in ,so if you have poor cold mains water pressure it will only give you poor hot water
- Multiple bathrooms
Using multiple taps /outlets will affect the pressure if two people are showering at the same time both showers will have poor pressure
- No back up
On a conventional system you have an immersion heater as a back up with a combi boiler there is no back up so if it fails you have no hot water or heating until the problem is fixed
- Pumped showers
You can’t have a pumped shower on a combi boiler it won’t work so if you already have a shower pump it will be removed when installing the new boiler
- Undersized
If a combi boiler is undersized for your property it will make it inaficciant although it would potentially work it will be overworked and use much more energy than a correctly sized one
